Watching your child suddenly begin blinking excessively, making repetitive noises, or developing unusual movements can feel confusing and deeply concerning as a parent. Tics often appear unexpectedly, may come and go in waves, and can become more noticeable during times of illness, stress, emotional overwhelm, or developmental change.
For some children, tics are brief and temporary. For others, they form part of a more chronic pattern that fluctuates over time. Understanding what tics are, and what may be contributing to them, can help parents respond with calm, confidence, and appropriate support.
WHAT ARE TICS?
Tics are sudden, repetitive, involuntary movements or sounds that a child may struggle to control. They are generally divided into two categories:
MOTOR TICS (movements). These may include:
- Arm movements
- Blinking excessively
- Eye rolling
- Facial grimacing
- Head jerking
- Jumping or unusual body movements
- Nose twitching
- Shoulder shrugging
- Touching or tapping repetitively

VOCAL TICS (sounds). These may include:
- Coughing
- Grunting
- Humming
- Repeating sounds or words
- Sniffing
- Throat clearing
Tics can vary greatly in intensity. Some are subtle and barely noticeable, while others may become disruptive, distressing, or exhausting for the child.
Importantly, children are often not “doing it on purpose.” Many describe an internal urge or tension that builds before the tic occurs, followed by temporary relief afterward.
Please note: tics should not be confused with stimming, which is generally a self-regulating and often purposeful repetitive behaviour used to manage sensory input, emotions, excitement, anxiety, or overwhelm. Stimming is most commonly associated with Autism and other neurodevelopmental differences.
WHY DO TICS HAPPEN?
Tics are complex and can arise from multiple contributing factors. In many children, they reflect an underlying sensitivity within the nervous system rather than a single isolated cause.
They may appear:
- Temporarily during or after illness
- Following viral infections
- During periods of emotional stress or anxiety
- After changes in routine or environment
- During developmental transitions
- Following emotional shock or trauma
- During periods of overstimulation or fatigue
- Alongside neurodevelopmental conditions
- As part of a chronic constitutional pattern
For some children, tics seem to “flare” during times when the immune or nervous system is under strain. Parents may notice a sudden worsening after:
- Fever or infection
- Sleep disruption
- Antibiotics or medications
- Heightened emotional stress
- School pressure
- Sensory overload
- Dietary changes
- Growth spurts
Others may notice that the tics improve significantly once the child is rested, emotionally settled, or physically recovered.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?
Stay calm and avoid drawing too much attention. Constantly correcting or highlighting the tic can unintentionally increase tension and self-consciousness. Children often feel embarrassed or worried that they “can’t stop.” Gentle reassurance and emotional safety matter deeply.
OBSERVE PATTERNS (these can often emerge over time) – keeping notes can be incredibly helpful, look for:
- When tics worsen
- Illness correlations
- Food sensitivities
- Sleep patterns
- Emotional triggers
- Environmental stressors
- Screen exposure
- Times of improvement
SUPPORT THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. Children with tics frequently benefit from:
- Consistent sleep routines
- Reduced overstimulation
- Time outdoors
- Emotional connection and reassurance
- Rhythmic daily structure
- Movement and physical play
- Nervous system regulation
- Balanced nutrition and sufficient hydration
CONSIDER THE WHOLE CHILD. Rather than suppressing the tic itself, it can help to ask:
- What changed before this began?
- What is the child’s emotional state?
- Has there been stress, illness, or overwhelm?
- Are there underlying sensitivities or imbalances?

A HOMEOPATHIC APPROACH
Homeopathy approaches tics by looking beyond the movement or sound itself and seeking to understand the child as a whole person. Rather than focusing solely on suppressing the tic, a homeopath considers the deeper patterns within the nervous system, immune system, emotional state, and overall health picture that may be contributing to the symptoms.
This individualised approach is important because no two children with tics present in the same way. One child may become highly emotional and clingy during tic flares, another may become irritable and explosive, while another may internalise stress and become withdrawn or anxious. Homeopathy aims to match the remedy to your unique child.
Families who choose health and homeopathy often report improvements not only in the frequency or intensity of tics, but also in areas such as:
- Anxiety levels
- Concentration
- Confidence
- Emotional regulation
- Overall wellbeing
- Sensory overwhelm
- Sleep quality
WORKING WITH A HOMEOPATH
- Ensures you receive a individualised remedy that matches your child’s presenting symptoms. Guides you in choosing the right potency/dosage. Offers you on-going support.
- Monitors progress, adjusting remedies and or potency/dosage if needed. For complex or chronic conditions, their expertise helps uncover potentially more deep-rooted causes
- Personally, where appropriate and/or needed I offer nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle recommendations to compliment the homeopathic approach. For tic management this is highly important, and from my experience, highly effective.
