THE COMMON COLD

THE COMMON COLD

Early signs of a common cold may include a runny nose, sneezing and some malaise. These initial symptoms are a clear indication that the body is wanting a good clear out. The lymphatic and immune systems are highly effective at eliminating waste from the body, primarily through coughing and mucus production. These symptoms may become uncomfortable, but play a key role in expelling toxins. This is precisely the time when it’s essential to support your child’s natural cleansing process.

If we can support this process rather than suppressing it, we can help to prevent symptoms worsening and/or avoid more complicated concerns later on. Suppressing these symptoms can hinder the body’s natural ability to eliminate unwanted toxins, virus and bacteria. Here are some tried and tested ways that have been the most beneficial for my boys, as well as the many others I have helped to support:

REST: Is crucial when your child has a cold, as it allows the body to focus its energy on healing and recovery – without this the immune system cannot fulfil its role effectively. Encouraging your child to rest where possible can reduce the risk of complications and speed up the healing process, helping them to recover faster and feel better sooner.

HYDRATE: Colds often come with symptoms like fever, sweating, and a runny nose, which can lead to dehydration. Drinking enough fluids helps prevent this, and can also help alleviate your child’s headaches, sore throat and helps to thin mucus, making it easier for the body to expel it. This can reduce congestion and promote easier breathing. Encourage your child to drink water regularly throughout the day. Provide electrolyte drinks if they are experiencing significant fluid loss due to fever or sweating. Offer immunity shots and/or green juice rich in anti-inflammatory ingredients to support the body’s natural detoxification process.

FOODS TO AVOID: Sugar and processed foods are NOT going to support your immune system. Where possible, offer simple wholesome foods to support your child during this time. If they are feeling congested, reduce mucus producing foods – in particular all dairy.

NASAL CLEANSE: For children who have been exposed to viruses, such as the common cold or influenza, nasal irrigation can help reduce the viral load in the nasal passages, potentially minimising the severity and duration of illness. Discover why a nasal cleanse is a daily practice for my boys and how it has brought about profound positive changes in their lives

SUPPLEMENT: Vitamin D – if your child isn’t already taking a daily recommended dose of Vitamin D, now is a great time to start. Vitamin D has been shown to support immune function and help children build resilience against viruses. Shop baby vitamin D3, children’s vitamin D3, and vitamin D3 1000 iu for children over 12 years. Vitamin C and Zinc – together they support a faster recovery and help children maintain a resilient immune system when battling colds. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells. It boosts the immune system by promoting the production of white blood cells, which are essential in fighting infections. Vitamin C also helps reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Zinc is crucial for immune cell function. It can reduce the length and intensity of cold symptoms when taken at the onset of illness. Zinc helps keep the immune system balanced and prevent symptoms from worsening.

SUNLIGHT: Helps the body synthesise vitamin D, which plays a crucial role in immune health. Adequate levels of vitamin D can enhance the body’s ability to fight off infections, including the common cold.
