HOMEOPATHY 101

HOMEOPATHY 101

Homeopathy has been in use for over 200 years – a time-tested system of natural medicine that supports the body’s own ability to recover. It is recognised worldwide and used safely for people of all ages, including during pregnancy, infancy, and throughout childhood.

Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances, plants, minerals, and sometimes animal sources. Through a unique process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), they contain no material dose of the original substance. What remains is the energetic imprint or essence, which gently stimulates the body’s natural healing response, without toxicity or side effects.

Because of this, homeopathy can be safely used alongside conventional medicine, and is often chosen by families who wish to take a gentle, whole-body approach to wellness.

A well-known example is Arnica, often called the “first-aid remedy”. Many people reach for Arnica after bumps, bruises, falls, or physical exertion. It helps reduce pain, swelling, and bruising, and supports faster recovery from injuries, dental work, or even childbirth. Arnica is a wonderful illustration of how homeopathy works, stimulating the body to repair itself rather than simply masking symptoms.

In essence, homeopathy works with the body, encouraging balance, vitality, and resilience naturally.

The Law of Similars: Homeopathy is found on the principle of “like cures like”. Meaning a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy individual can be used to heal similar symptoms in someone who is sick. Take for example the homeopathic remedy Allium Cepa, derived from red onion. When you chop up an onion your eyes may water or burn, and your nose runs. In homeopathy we use micro doses of a substance, in this case red onion, in very diluted amounts, to treat people suffering with those or similar symptoms, for example hay fever.

Trituration or Dilution: The source material undergoes a process of trituration (grinding) or dilution with a solvent such water. During this process, the substance is diluted to various degrees depending on the desired potency of the remedy.

Potentization: After the initial dilution, the solution goes through a process called succussion. This process is believed to activate the medicinal properties of the substance and release its “vital energy”, the “essence” of the substance.

Serial Dilution and Succussion: The diluted solution is further diluted with more solvent, and the succussion process is repeated. This serial dilution and succussion may be performed multiple times, with each step resulting in a higher potency of the remedy.

Individualized Treatment: Homeopathy considers each person as a unique individual with their own set of symptoms and experiences. Homeopaths conduct detailed case taking to help understand the person’s physical symptoms, emotional state, and overall health history in order to select a remedy that matches the individual’s symptoms as closely as possible.

Holistic Approach: Unlike allopathy, homeopathy has a holistic and individualised approach, which treats the whole person – rather than just the symptoms of the disease. Homeopaths consider physical, mental and emotional aspects of a person’s health.
