First and foremost, if your child is experiencing a persistent high fever that does not settle, and/or any concerning breathing difficulties – it is essential to seek prompt medical evaluation.
Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause weeks, and sometimes months, of coughing fits. It’s caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacteria, which irritates the airways and leads to severe, spasmodic coughing. For children, especially younger ones, these coughing episodes can be exhausting and distressing, often followed by a “whooping” sound as they struggle to catch their breath.
In the early stages, pertussis can look much like a common cold — mild fever, runny nose, and an occasional cough. But as it progresses, the cough becomes more persistent, sometimes leading to vomiting, disturbed sleep, and extreme fatigue. For families, it can be an incredibly challenging time, as nights become sleepless and recovery feels slow.
Because the symptoms can linger long after the initial infection, pertussis can take a toll not just on the child but on the entire household. Parents often describe feeling helpless watching their child struggle with changing symptoms, or frustrated when conventional treatments offer only partial relief.
The good news is that children can recover well with the right support – and families who take time to strengthen immunity and restore balance often find their child’s resilience improves over time. Whether through prevention, early support, or ongoing recovery, homeopathy offers a gentle and holistic way to guide your child’s body back to health.
Please note that pertussis progresses in distinct stages (see below), and recognising these stages is important for providing the right care. Understanding them helps you navigate the course of the illness, know what to expect, and respond appropriately if symptoms worsen.
EARLY STAGE (Catarrhal / Cold like)
- Symptoms: Mild fever, runny nose, occasional cough, may have sneezing, watery eyes
PAROXYSMAL STAGE (Intense Coughing Fits)
- Symptoms: Fits of violent, spasmodic cough, whooping sound, vomiting after coughing, exhaustion.
CONVALESCENT / LINGERING STAGE
- Symptoms: Residual cough, mucus, fatigue, weak appetite, poor sleep.

SUPPORT CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
In homeopathy, pertussis is approached with care and individualization. Remedies are selected based on the specific nature of the cough, the child’s energy levels, emotional state, and how they respond to illness overall. While there are several commonly used homeopathic remedies for the symptoms of pertussis, it’s highly recommended to seek professional guidance when using them. As you’ve seen from the stages described above, pertussis can be complex and unpredictable, with symptoms that shift and intensify in unexpected ways.
Navigating this illness on your own can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and isolating, especially when caring for little ones who are struggling to rest or recover. Working with a qualified homeopath ensures that the remedies, timing, and potencies are well matched to your child’s individual needs — and that adjustments can be made safely as symptoms evolve.
To start the support process, simply book in for an acute consultation.
I’ve had the privilege of supporting many families through the pertussis journey, using a combination of homeopathic remedies, nutritional support, and practical home care protocols to ease symptoms, strengthen recovery, and bring comfort to both child and parent. With the right support, healing becomes not only possible, but gentler, calmer, and more assured.

WORKING WITH A HOMEOPATH
- Ensures you receive a individualised remedy that matches your child’s presenting symptoms. Guides you in choosing the right potency/dosage. Offers you on-going support.
- Monitors progress, adjusting remedies and or potency/dosage if needed. For complex or chronic conditions, a homeopath’s expertise helps uncover potentially more deep-rooted causes.
- Personally, where appropriate and/or needed I offer nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle recommendations to compliment the homeopathic approach.
SUPPORTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
- Vitamin C can be effective for pertussis because it helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, easing coughing intensity and frequency. It also supports immune function and tissue repair, helping the body recover more efficiently during and after the illness.
- Turmeric paste, a combination of honey, turmeric and black pepper, great at reducing inflammation, and supporting the overall immune system. Safe for children over 12 months.
- Hydration is vital for immune function. It helps to flush out harmful toxins from the body, and for loosening mucus to help clear congested airways.
HELPFUL THERAPIES
- Steam inhalation is my personal recommendation to help congestion. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the water. Do take care with younger children.
- A soothing homemade chest/back rub can help ease a cough, loosen mucus, and promote relaxation, especially at night. Mix coconut oil with just a drop of eucalyptus or lavender oil.
- When a child rests, their immune system can work more efficiently to fight off the underlying cause of the cough, allowing the body to focus its energy on healing and recovery.
