MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, which belongs to the poxvirus family. It is generally harmless, but it is contagious and can spread quite easily, especially among children.

The infection appears as small, round, flesh-coloured or pink bumps on the skin. These bumps often have a tiny dimple or pit in the centre, which makes them distinctive. They can show up singly or in clusters, and while they are usually painless, some children may find them itchy. Occasionally, as the body starts to fight the virus, the bumps can become red or inflamed before healing.

Molluscum contagiosum spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact or by sharing personal items such as towels, clothing, or toys. It can also spread in places like swimming pools where children are in close contact. In adults, it may sometimes be transmitted through sexual contact. Because of its contagious nature, scratching the bumps can also spread them to other areas of the body.

For most healthy children, the condition is self-limiting and resolves without treatment. The bumps usually disappear within six to twelve months, although in some cases it can take up to two years. Since it is not dangerous, doctors often recommend simply waiting it out, while keeping the skin clean and discouraging scratching to prevent spreading or secondary infection. However, for some children, Molluscum can cause significant discomfort, itching, or embarrassment, and the risk of secondary infection makes supportive care really worthwhile. Homeopathy can be considered to help the body clear the virus more efficiently, potentially supporting quicker recovery and reducing recurrence.

TOP HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

BOWEL REMEDIES for recurrent or persistent episodes

Bowel remedies are often used as a first step in supporting the body’s natural detoxification pathways, particularly the gut, which plays a central role in immunity and overall skin health. In children with recurrent or persistent Molluscum, gently supporting the bowel can help the body clear viral infections more efficiently and may reduce recurrence.

WORKING WITH A HOMEOPATH

  • Ensures you receive a individualised remedy that matches your child’s presenting symptoms. Guides you in choosing the right potency/dosage. Offers you on-going support.
  • Monitors progress, adjusting remedies and or potency/dosage if needed. For complex or chronic conditions, a homeopath’s expertise helps uncover potentially more deep-rooted causes.
  • Personally, where appropriate and/or needed I offer nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle recommendations to compliment the homeopathic approach.

NUTRITION SUPPORT

  • Vitamin C sources including citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries and bell peppers helps to supports the immune system by boosting white blood cell function, helping the body fight molluscum.
  • Reduce your child’s intake of processed foods, excessive dairy (especially cheese), and sugary processed snacks can contribute to sluggish bowels.
  • Sufficient amounts of water is absolutely key. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon can also help in some cases.

AT HOME CARE THERAPIES

  • Keep the area clean and dry, and remind your child to avoid harsh scrubbing or picking at the lesions to prevent irritation or secondary infection.
  • Mild topical emollients, I like and recommend 100% organic coconut oil (also anti-microbial and anti-fungal) to keep skin soft and reduce irritation.
  • Avoid sharing personal items where possible – towels, clothing, and bedding should not be shared while lesions are active.
