TUMMY TROUBLES

TUMMY TROUBLES

It is said that a bowel movement a day keeps the doctor away. Irregular bowel movements may be common, but they are definitely not normal. Everyone, adult or child, should poop at least once or twice a day, and it’s best to start good bowel habits early.

In Chinese medicine it is believed that constipation is the result of kidney chi deficiency, that the kidney no longer directs the correct amount of water to the bowel. Hydration is not only key, it is imperative. You can think of it this way – liken constipation to a boat in dry a dock, in order to float the boat, you need to increase the water.

It is thought that a great many of us are chronically dehydrated. When we regularly consume insufficient amounts of fluids, the body’s thirst mechanism becomes less sensitive over time, leading to chronic dehydration without a desire for thirst. If you suspect this is the case for you or your child look for its signs that include dark urine, dry mouth, constipation, fatigue and/or headaches. It’s important to replenish fluids and maintain an adequate daily water routine to prevent complications.

  • Limit/omit caffeine – Caffeine is a diuretic, and can stimulate the kidneys to produce more urine, which can result in temporary dehydration if not balanced with adequate fluid intake. One cup of tea or coffee needs to be replenished by 2 cups of water.
  • Add Celtic sea salt – adequate electrolyte balance is crucial for many bodily functions including hydration. Consider adding electrolyte water to your daily routine. Add a grain of Celtic sea salt to every large glass of water, or place a grain onto or under the tongue, allow to dissolve, then drink your large glass of water. Do this for every glass you drink.
